Memory of great cows last a lifetime. When Lucy was born I knew I had something special; she so wooly haired for a fullblood and had a captivating presence. She had such big furry ears which has always correlated with quality Simmental genetics. She had a successful show career, but her biggest achievement has been her genetic contributions. Lucy is the base of the entire fullblood breeding program at AJB. Her dominant traits are passed on throughout the generations; solid color, lots of hair, black pigmented hair, black hooves, sound feet and legs and her signature dimensional rib shape. Lucy is now a donor female; her massive volume and extra sweet nature make her just as special as the day she was born. Lucy has more than earned her right to stay on the farm indefinitely , she will never leave AJB.

Whoopi was a powerful black cow that my dad bought years ago. I loved her mass, rib shape and the fact that you could sleep on her top she was so wide. I also loved that she has tons of hair and by far the most depth of body of any black Simmental I had ever seen. Her pedigree is one I have based my black herd on, as you review the cow families, you will see how her phenotype is stamped on multiple generations. Her ability to “keep the chrome” in her descendants has added value to our herd in many ways, specifically the addition of Blue, her great maternal grandson.

This is a female I bought as a calf. I feel her grandmother, Circle L Bambi, is one of the best cows at Bonchuk Farms. Udder, type, natural muscling, almost fleck-like in structure; I bought 4X to retain a piece of the genetics I loved so much. This particular female is very fertile, she catches early to every time to her first service and she has been bred many different ways now and she pairs well with a variety of genetics.

This is a cow that has proven herself to be a very excellent producer. The quality of udders in this line are definitely based on the genetics contributed by the fullblood MCC Jasper bull who sired females with udders and milk quality that was unmatched. This cow has a bit more scale and frame than most of my herd, which makes her a great compliment and a source of increased performance genetics.

The first original guppy; my first Gelbvieh purchase, and I still remember all the flack I took for buying her. She was a very moderate, deep-sided female that, as a calf, stood in some big Simmental shadows. I showed 40L alongside Lucy as a young female and I always had people asking me, “Why Gelbvieh?”. My choice to buy a Gelbvieh was strictly chance: I still remember walking to tie-outs at the fall show in Brandon. We tied to our trailers back then, and as I weaved between the trailers heading back to the barns, I spied a strong silhouette in darkness, I stopped dead and went back to give the cow a once over, she was remarkable. I read the farm name on the top of the trailer, Maple Grove Gelbvieh, I went to their stall the next day, and I fell in love with a breed that I feel compliments my breeding philosophies and adds to my genetic diversity within the herd. Funny thing about a cheap heifer calf; she has grossed me well over her $2300 purchase price and has raised the first and only ever; two-time Canadian National Champion Gelbvieh Female.
